WHAT IS BFRT?
BFRT is a technique that allows you to exercise using considerably less resistance and still achieve significant gains in muscle strength and size.
It achieves this by briefly and intermittently stopping blood flow to the muscle using a tourniquet while at rest or exercising.
The metabolic stress created through BFRT is just as effective as mechanical stress at inducing hypertrophic (strength) changes.
WHY USE BFRT?
Traditional methods of strength training take up to 12 weeks to see any improvements. With BFRT, you can see gains in muscle strength and size in as little as 2 to 4 weeks!
An individual can use lighter loads (20-30% 1 repetition maximum) with BFRT. Without BFRT, higher loads (60-80% 1 repetition maximum) is required to achieve the same results. Higher loads are not always appropriate post-operatively or in a person with pain.
Improvements in strength and function have been observed in both untrained and athletic populations. Typical physical therapy exercises are used in conjunction with BFRT to achieve these changes (ie: leg lifts, squats, lunges, etc).
WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM BFRT?
Individuals who are “load compromised” (fractures, immobilization, weight bearing restrictions, etc)
Pre-operative patients looking to gain strength before surgery and Post-operative patients ready to start strengthening sooner.
Those with acute or chronic sprains and strains (tendinopathies)
Experienced athletes and life-long couch potatoes!
